32 National Parks & Reserves The 12 Major National Parks n 33 Two lagoons, Laguna Cabarete and Laguna Goleta, home to thousands of birds, occupy much of this north coast park that lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cordillera Septentrional mountains just south of Cabarete. Other star attractions of the park are several underground caves near the lagoons that contain Taino petroglyphs and pools large enough for swimming. Some caves and parts of the lagoons aren’t easily accessible, so many visitors come with guided groups or hire motoconchos to take them around.

The national park also oversees arid Isla Cabrita (Goat Island), a small island marked by a lighthouse just off the most northwest point of the mainland. The beach there is prettier than any other in Montecristi, making it a popular stop with visitors. It’s also a bird sanctuary harboring herons, egrets, and pelicans. Less than a mile offshore are the Cayos Siete Hermanos (Seven Brothers Keys), seven more sandy desert islets surrounded by reefs. Endangered sea turtles lay their eggs there, and they also serve as bird sanctuaries; pretty white-sand beaches are a lure for visitors and tour operators.

The Lowlands The Caribbean coastal plain, a six- to 25-mile-wide and 150-mile-long lowland that runs from the mouth of the Ocoa River west of Santo Domingo to the Coconut Coast on the far eastern end of the island, is the country’s major population center. Since the arrival of the Europeans 500 years ago, much of this land has been used for livestock grazing and sugar cane growing. It’s bordered on the north by the southern fringes of the Cordillera Central, the Sierra de Yamasa, and the Cordillera Oriental.
